Closed to Departure (CTD)

Closed to Departure (CTD) is a booking restriction that prevents guests from checking out on a specific date. While guests can stay through a date with a CTD restriction, they cannot select it as their departure day.

Why it matters

CTD is a strategic tool for optimizing occupancy and revenue, particularly around high-demand periods. By preventing departures on key dates, operators can encourage longer stays, reduce costly single-night gaps in their calendar, and minimize turnover-related operational burdens on cleaning and maintenance staff during peak times. This leads to smoother operations and increased profitability.

Operator use case

Operators apply CTD restrictions to prevent undesirable vacancies before or after a major event or holiday. For instance, if a three-day festival creates a long weekend of demand, an operator might set a CTD rule for the Saturday of that weekend. This discourages guests from booking only Friday and Saturday, leaving an unbooked Sunday, and instead encourages a full three-night booking.

Industry insight

A common misconception is that CTD should be used liberally to force longer bookings. However, overuse can backfire, frustrating potential guests and reducing overall booking conversion. Seasoned operators use CTD surgically, often in combination with minimum length of stay (MLOS) rules, to protect peak demand days without closing off too much availability. For example, instead of applying a strict CTD on a holiday, a manager might allow departures but at a significantly higher rate, capturing revenue from guests who need that specific checkout date. The most effective use of CTD is data-driven, based on historical booking patterns and market demand signals, rather than assumptions.

Tech & tools relevance

Closed to Departure functionality is a standard feature in most professional Property Management Systems (PMS) and channel managers. These systems allow operators to apply CTD rules to specific properties and dates, which are then pushed out to major Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) like Airbnb and Vrbo. Dynamic pricing engines can also be configured to automatically suggest or apply CTD restrictions based on predefined rules and real-time market data, automating a key part of revenue management strategy.

How Hostfully helps

Hostfully’s platform allows property managers to set booking restrictions, including Closed to Departure rules, on their central calendar. These stay controls can be applied to specific dates or date ranges and are automatically synced across connected booking channels. This ensures that an operator's strategy to prevent check-outs on high-demand days is consistently enforced across all listing sites, reducing the risk of unwanted gaps in the calendar.
